"Pulchra sunt oppida Gandavum, Antwerpia, Lovanium et
Mechlinia, sed nihil ad Brugas"

(Adrianus Barlandus)

Sixteenth-century author, philosopher, historian, teacher and publisher Barlandus already knew it: Bruges is wonderful.
That urban beauty is the commitment and concern of the City of Bruges and all its residents.
Brugge Foundation seeks cooperation with partners who believe in socially responsible repurposing of valuable heritage.

Bruges is a very serious matter for the Bruges man, the city pride is incredibly large. In 2015, 7.8 million visitors proved that those people of Bruges have every reason to be proud. The city's past is its future, this is also the city council's conviction. To preserve the immovable heritage alive for residents, local residents and visitors, we will have to make joint efforts. The city of Bruges is leading the way and providing the 'seed money' giving Bruges Foundation a running start.

The redevelopment of the Godelieve Abbey is only possible with close cooperation between the city and the Bruges Foundation. a user agreement for the site was finally reached in July 2017 and the city supported the Bruges Foundation with a start-up grant to help pay for, among other things, a master plan for the site, maintenance of the gardens, and start-up costs for the Godelieve project.

The Heritage Agency is an agency and scientific institution of the Flemish government. We are responsible for architectural, archaeological, landscape and sailing heritage. Together with our partners, we help shape and colour Flanders now and in the future by making caring for our immovable heritage a matter of course for everyone.

We prepare and implement heritage policy in Flanders. We inventory and protect buildings, landscapes, archaeological sites and sailing heritage. Furthermore, we support citizens, local authorities, designers, developers and other bodies with advice and grants. Finally, we promote the quality of our approach to immovable heritage, with thorough policy-oriented research and targeted communication. This is how we support the Flemish Minister of Immovable Heritage.

Together with our daily ambassadors, we ensure that real estate heritage is a matter of and for everyone. Here, cities and municipalities are our partner of choice to communicate and translate immovable heritage policy to citizens. We maintain close relations with other policy areas such as tourism, spatial planning, arts and heritage, nature, education, etc. In addition, we subsidise a number of structural heritage partners. These associations and volunteers put heritage on the map every day.

The Heritage Department wants to valorise the heritage in the province of West Flanders and support heritage owners and managers in preserving this fascinating heritage. Moreover, the service wants to stimulate the opening up and perception of this heritage and encourage all kinds of target groups to discover our West Flemish past.
